The YMCA of Germantown provides transitional housing to 45 homeless men recovering from substance abuse in the Germantown area. The Office of Supportive Housing makes referrals.
YMCA Germantown focuses on creating a community within the transitional housing program. It provides two communal meals a day and residents are assigned chores like putting out trash, mopping the dining area, cleaning dinning area bathrooms, and washing dishes. Another focus is on helping residents over come their substance addictions. Case managers stress sobriety awareness and coping skills and refer residents to community substance abuse services such as 12-step programs. Guest speakers talk to residents about addiction issues as well as securing permanent housing.
Off-site programs provide a variety of services for YMCA residents. In addition to addiction help residents are referred to services for education and vocational help, health care, HIV/AIDS, credit repair, STD and sexual health, mental health, and housing help.
The YMCA also encourages residents to volunteer in their communities. This benefits residents, and the community, by connecting them to their environment and encouraging compassion for others.
