Somerset Emergency Shelter is operated by ADCM, a for-profit housing company, and provides services for 156 men and women at its multi-story North Philadelphia facility. The Department of Corrections and the Office of Supportive Housing make referrals.
Residents at Somerset are separated by gender and put on different floors. Many residents were recently released from correctional institutions. The makeup of the resident population presents special challenges to their recovery, but staff members take a non-traditional approach to helping residents achieve success. Case Managers first address any immediate needs that residents have, like food, medicine, and rehab for drugs and alcohol, and then slowly introduce them to additional services.
Services are mostly available from off-site partners, like Wedge Medical Center, NU-STOP North, and Philadelphia Alive Center For Transformation. Services include educational and vocational referrals, life skills classes, employment placement, computer training, health services, drug and alcohol rehab, mental health services, and community-building classes.
