Families In Transition

Part of the Resources for Human Development, a nonprofit, the Families In Transition (FIT) program offers transitional housing to 30 female-headed households in Philadelphia. All heads of households are 18-27 years old and the Office of Supportive Housing makes referrals. Families In Transition offers scattered-site transitional housing to 30 female-headed households throughout the Philadelphia area.

One of the interesting offerings at Families in Transition is the Mother Wise workshop. Held both during the day and the evening the Mother Wise workshops are specially designed to help young, single women who do not have much experience running a household. The focus is on creating a plan for each resident to deal with issues like parenting, stress management, and budgeting. On-site childcare is available for residents attending the workshops.

Case managers meet with each resident twice a week to plan an individual program to achieve stability. Referrals to off-site service providers are available for health care, behavioral health issues, and substance abuse problems. Life skills classes are offered dealing with issues like health and hygiene, self-esteem, community connections, money management, family planning, employment, and interpersonal relationships.

FIT provides help in fixing residents’ credit so that they can successfully secure permanent housing. Referrals are available to subsidized housing or market-based renting and purchase.
