Calcutta House Serenity Court

Run by the nonprofit Calcutta House, Serenity Court provides nine units of permanent housing to homeless individuals with HIV/AIDS in North Philadelphia. The network of HIV/AIDS and homelessness service organizations makes referrals.

Serenity Court is designed to provide comfort and help to those who are severely ill and dying because of HIV/AIDS. The layout of the building and the housing units is designed to provide a warm and comforting place for residents to spend their final days. Housing units are inspected every year to make sure they are up to code. Residents contribute 30% of their income to rent, although this can be reduced if a resident’s income increases above certain levels. Calcutta House provides an on-site nurse and referrals to medical help. These is an outdoor porch, a spacious common area, and meditation rooms for privacy. Additional rooms are available for a quiet place to meet a visitor outside of the resident’s own room. Outside sources provide additional services when needed.
