ActionAIDS, a nonprofit, directs the Positive Living Permanent Supportive Housing Project (PLPSHP) at scattered locations throughout Philadelphia. PLPSHP offers 15 housing units for formerly homeless individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Referrals come through multiple channels, including the Office of Supportive Housing, the City Department of Human Services, and other outreach agencies, shelters, hospitals, and organizations.
Ten of the 15 units are single-occupancy units and five are two-bedroom units. At least four of the two-bedroom units are reserved for participants with small families; the remaining unit is intended either for small family use or for a resident needing a caretaker.
All services for residents are tailored to individual need. The stabilization of medical benefits is prioritized to ensure that residents receive appropriate treatment, counseling, and medicine. Other support services include case management, housing counseling to examine alternate options, family programs, and work support programs, all aiming towards a goal of self-reliance and eventual autonomy for persons in the program. A “Buddy Program” matching participants with trained volunteers provides external social contact through visits, phone calls, and help with daily living and household tasks.
